This is Borobudur in central Java, a place I have wanted to visit for a great number of years. Built in the 9th Century and abandoned in the 14th Century, the site was only rediscovered about 200 years ago and was completely overtaken by the jungle. To reach what at the time was a mythical structure, century old trees had to be cut down and extensive thick jungle vegetation had to be burned down and cleared. The structure was completely renovated and restored in the 20th Century.
Our plan was to start in Sumatra in early September 2010, and work our way down and eastwards through the islands of Indonesia, avoiding the monsoon season that would be behind us we progressed forwards.
