Malaysia would be the real start of the journey in Asia with a flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur on the 20th August 2010.
Malaysia is really like two countries in one, split in half by the South China Sea. It’s a multicultural mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian flavours. We had a plan to use Malaysia as a kind of hub, with cheap flights from KL to various countries.
Indonesia would be the first port of call, but to get there, we would take an overnight train from KL to Palau Penang, followed by a flight across to Medan in Sumatra, Indonesia.
So far we have covered KL, Penang, Singapore and Melaka, followed by KL again and all on the west coast, the east coast would have to be done after March 2011 when the monsoon period would then be over. This photograph below is the Perhentain Islands on the east coast and they look absolutely stunning.
In the meantime, we would be organising a flight from KL to Myanmar where we would spend around a month travelling from late November to late December before flying into Bangkok, Thailand where we would stay for Christmas and New Year.
